Sunday at the museum

Free admission to Trentino’s Provincial Museums on the first Sunday of every month; from March, two new exhibitions, and the re-opening of the Museo Retico (Rhaetian Museum) of Sanzeno, and of the Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé (Fiavè Pile dwelling Museum)

By means of the Province’s Council Decision no. 1496/2015 (September 2015), Trentino offers visitors free admission to its so-called Provincial Museums, on the first Sunday of every month, and on Trentino’s Autonomy Day (5 September, every year).

The Provincial Museums are the following:

Muse (Science Museum), with the new exhibition Genoma umano. Quello che ci rende unici (Human genome. What makes us unique);

Mart - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Rovereto, which includes the Casa d’arte futurista Depero; the latter will open the exhibition "Animali metallici. Il culto dell'automobile nel XX secolo" (Metallic Beasts. The 20th-Century Cult of the Automobile) on Friday 2 March at 18.00;

Castello del Buonconsiglio (Buonconsiglio Castle) and, for the latter’s other five sites, see their respective opening season and times: Castel Thun, Castel Beseno, Castello di Stenico, Castel Caldes;

and the Museo degli usi e costumi della gente trentina (Museum of the habits and customs of the people of Trentino).

In addition to them, also the museums run by the Department for Cultural Heritage offer free admission:

S.A.S.S. Spazio Archeologico Sotterraneo del Sas - Tridentum (Tridentum S.A.S.S. - Underground Archaeological Site SASS),

the Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé (Fiavè Pile dwelling Museum) ,

and the Museo Retico (Rhaetian Museum) of Sanzeno;

the two last ones re-open on Saturday 3 March and can be visited on on Saturday, Sunday and holidays, from 14.00 to 18.00.

It’s an unmissable opportunity, since museums often schedule exhibition openings or other interesting events on the first Sunday of every month.

Buonconsiglio Castle

The Buonconsiglio Castle is the largest and most important monumental complex of the Trentino Alto Adige region. It was the residence of the prince-bishops of Trento from the 13th century to the end of the 18th century. Castelvecchio is the oldest nucleus; the Magno Palazzo is the 16th century expansion and is one of the most sumptuous Renaissance-style palaces in Italy.

Stenico castle

The Castello di Stenico is an exhibition venue of the Castello del Buonconsiglio. It dates back to more than 2000 years, and was first built as a refuge for the Stoni, from which the town takes its name

Thun castle

Built in the 1250s, it was the main residence of the Thun family. It was open to the public in 2010, and is nowadays one of the venues of the Castello del Buonconsiglio Museum.

Mart - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Rovereto - Rovereto

Futurism, Pop Art, Realism and great exhibitions: Mart in Rovereto is one of the most interesting museums on the Italian scene. It was designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, with the collaboration of Rovereto-based engineer Giulio Andreolli. Every year the Museum holds one large exhibition and several temporary shows, and provides a range of interesting educational activities.
